Today there is a run through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.
It’s called the Tunnel To Towers Run.
It traces the course of Steven Siller, a firefighter who was off duty on 9/11. When the towers were attacked, he drove from Brooklyn to WTC rather than to a golf outing. At the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, they wouldn’t let him drive through, so hear geared up and ran 5k through the tunnel with 75lbs of equipment on his back. He ran to the towers, where he died. He left behind a wife and 5 kids.
This yearly run is a fund raiser for a huge foundation that supports many initiatives: homes for teens and children, burn centers, FDNY and others.
