The Bloomberg Dynasty Lives On

So Mayor Mike bought himself another 4 years at the helm of NYC.

The margin of victory was slim and every pundit is saying how people resented the deluge of direct mail and the fact that Bloomy thumbed the New York electorate in the eye by single handedly overturning term limits – read: negating a law that stood in the way of him doing what he wanted to do, which was to run for a 3rd term.

All that is a crock of sh*t because he’s in office again, and the sheeple who elected him didn’t realize that a democracy does not function based on “I will change the law because I know what’s best for you”.  And everyone did not vote against Bloomberg basically accepted the significant erosion of voting power purpetrated by Bloomy.

Is the city better than before, I’m not sure.  I do know that the city definitely lives off of me and does not serve me, a life long resident.  There are double-standards and selective law enforcement everywhere.  I find that summonses and fines are used to generate revenue and not to enforce (or promote) quality of life.

  • Man pulls over to pick up his wife (who is waiting at curbside), and during the 30 seconds he is there, a traffic cop issues a ticket for blocking the bicycle lane.  Never mind the fact that no bicycles were inconvenienced, never mind the fact that city buses or city vehicles can park for extended periods blocking the same lanes.  The city’s official response: he broke the law.
  • Placards on the dashboard indicating an affiliation with the police or any city agency are a free pass to park anywhere and not get a ticket: less than 5 feet from a hydrant, encroaching in a crosswalk, in a no parking during certain times zone… but should I pull in to drop off groceries, I get a ticket in less time than it takes to take bags from the trunk to the curb.
  • Sanitation runs around issuing fines to buildings if the recycling or rubbish is placed curbside 15 minutes before a certain time, or if a homeless person tears open the bag and makes a mess, the building receives the fine.

This way of using law to generate revenue was started during the Giuliani administration and perfected by Bloomberg.  Both are clearly out of touch with a day in the life of the masses they claim to represent.  This sort of municipal abuse is the result of a top-down policy that uses fines to generate revenue and not the threat of a fine as a deterrent for misbehavior.

And now Bloomberg says he’s going to go after the Metropolitan Transit Authority.  Whatever.  There’s a hollow campaign promise if ever I heard one.  The MTA is a private agency that has refused to open its books or show an ounce of transparency despite receiving public funds and demonstrating gross mismanagement of funds and increasing costs to the public at a rate outpacing inflation by more than 10 to 1.  And after 8 years in office, now Mike thinks to do something? You only now decide to say something in the interest of the masses of New Yorkers?  Is it because you just allowed a new tax on all New Yorkers to subsidize the MTA?  That’s pretty socialist for a Republican.  Bull.  I’ll believe it when I see it.  And 4 years from now, good riddance, hopefully.

Junk Mail

NoMikeI wonder if anyone else in New York City is as absolutely annoyed as I am by the volume of junk mail I’ve received from Bloomberg’s reelection campaign.

Granted, I’m a bit jaded.

Fundamentally I’m vexed that Mayor Bloomberg, in his second term, decided to abolish the term limits law that “we the people” voted into effect. I’ll give him credit for having guts! To bulldoze a law that the electorate put on the books and then to try and convince that same electorate to vote for him means one of two things: either Mayor Mike is Hoodini, or people are genuinely senseless enough to accept a politician who has no respect for the electorate he supposedly represents and serves.

Sigh.

Mike Bloomberg: just say no!

NoMikeI don’t like Bloomberg’s corporate policies. Did you know that if you work at Bloomberg’s company, if you resign or quit, let’s say to go earn more money, you can never come back? The philosophy is that “you were employed as an asset to the company and if you leave, you’re hurting the company. How could we hire back someone who would hurt the company?” But the corporate environment there is no better than most corporate environments.

Despite bringing a reasonable business acumen to the Mayor’s office and not being in the pocket of big business, I don’t like Mike’s mayoral policies either. I’m going to speak about the ones that have impacted me.

First of all, how is it acceptable for a politician to do a power-grab in plain sight and nobody be COMPLETELY up in arms? I mean, this guy has changed one of the most fundamental laws in our country, and through financial might (nobody can oppose his advertisement coffers) and political power (due to the fact that nobody will be able to oppose him, nobody else will stand in his way and risk political suicide) he has managed to steal power from the voters.

NY State Senate is a joke

NY State SealIf you live in New York State, whomever your state senator is, you need to vote for the person who runs against the incumbent at the next election. The only way these morons will learn that their irresponsible partisanship and poor judgment is unacceptable is if they lose their seats as a result of their behavior.

Disable “autoplay” in WidowsXP

OK, so if you know me, you’re probably tired of hearing me complain incessantly about how my windozeXP machine was nailed by a virus/adware/malware crap recently.  Something called Virtumode as well as some ridiculous program that corrupted all .doc and .jpg and .mp3 files, a mere seconds before the windows popup bubble says “Windows has detected corrupt files, click here to download File Fix Professional 2009″ , which clearly is not something by windows.

I mean, would you believe the nerve of these people, infecting your machine with a virus that corrupts all your data, and then selling you the tool to fix it!?  Talk about extortion!

Fortunately, I have a fileserver and I use SecondCopy to constantly sync my data on my desktop with the fileserver.  Then if anything changes, I have it configured to move the original to a “deleted” folder while sync’ing, and keep that for up to 3 generations.  It’s a pretty slick app and it’s saved me on more than one occasion.  Well worth the $20 if you ask me. MAC users can try ChronoSync, not that you’d be attacked by a virus, but I digress.

So back to the point, configuring windows to not run stuff automatically, like when you insert a CD or a USB key or a camera or anything.  First, there’s a registry hack that was the solution to a recent malware attack on USB keys:
